Francine Parker: What are they doing? Why do they come here?

Stephen: Some kind of instinct. Memory of what they used to do. This was an important place in their lives.

While the zombies in George A. Romero’s classic 1978 film, Dawn of the Dead, may not have known why they shambled to the Monroeville Mall, countless fans DO head there with a specific purpose.  Many adoring fans visit just to say they’ve been fortunate enough to experience walking around the mall used as the main filming location for Romero’s Dawn of the Dead.

Unfortunately fans will soon have one less reason to visit the iconic Monroeville Mall located in Monroeville, Pennsylvania. We recently discovered on Facebook that plans are underway to remove the small bridge seen on screen. This is especially sad because the footbridge is one of the last recognizable portions of the mall left for Dawn fans to personally experience, touch and enjoy.  Even more troubling is the fact that the bridge could simply be discarded instead of being treated like the piece of zombie and horror film history it is!

Before we go any further we should say we haven’t been able to verify things first hand.  While we have absolutely no reason to NOT believe what we’ve heard, we feel obligated to point out we’re simply reporting what we’ve read via social media. You can view the Facebook community page post we’re referring to here:

It has come to our attention that this bridge which you see in the movie DAWN OF THE DEAD is being removed. It is one of…

As Father Time dictates, things change over the years. Much of the mall, the setting and main filming location for Dawn of the Dead, looks vastly different from the footage that was shot back in 1977. The only original anchor store left is J.C. Penny and even it was relocated from its original location near the center of the mall.  Most of the original J.C. Penny area seen on screen was demolished and removed to make room for a movie theater in 2012. To put it bluntly, the bridge is one of the last remaining recognizable portions of the mall that is featured in the film.

We’ll keep our thoughts and comments about mall business decisions to ourselves. The bottom line is this iconic bridge is being removed. As much as that decision boggles our mind and breaks our heart . . . the decision has reportedly already been made. Zombie fans should now focus on making sure this small piece of cinematic history is preserved and relocated to a new home where it will be cherished and appreciated by fans for years to come. There really is no better home than the Living Dead Museum or perhaps even the Heinz History Museum. Either one is certainly a much better home than a dumpster or scrap pile.

Countless fans make the journey to the Monroeville Mall specifically to visit the former filming location and to walk across the bridge. If we act NOW we might be able to help ensure the bridge is preserved and relocated so fans can continue to enjoy and appreciate this piece of cult film history. The best part is saving it could cost little more than a few moments of your time!

Judging from the Save the Dawn of the Dead Bridge Facebook Community Page, there isn’t currently a need for funds to save the bridge. They mainly need fans to raise awareness and help spread the word. If enough people voice their opinion and share their thoughts on why the bridge should be saved and relocated it just might happen!

OK. There is one small catch here; we need to move FAST. From what we’ve read the pond area has already been drained and the removal of the bridge could be just days away. So what can you do to help out?

First, sign the online petition located here:

You can also help spread the word by liking and sharing the Save the Dawn of the Dead Bridge Community Page on Facebook.  Commenting and showing your support there and here on this blog post will definitely help the cause as well.

What are your thoughts? Should the bridge be preserved? Why or why not? If you do want to see the bridge relocated where do you think it should go? Our vote is for The Living Dead Museum! Let us know what you think in the comments section below!

The Walking Dead The Prison Board Game

The folks over at Skybound recently announced a standalone sequel to the The Walking Dead Board Game. The upcoming game is simply titled The Walking Dead: The Prison and is inspired by the events that transpired in the comic from issues 13 to 24. You guessed it: the glorious prison arc.

Like its predecessor, this game includes Walking Dead artwork from Charlie Adlard and it will feature the comic characters you know and love. In The Walking Dead: The Prison you’ll need to search, clear and maintain various areas of the prison. The goal of The Walking Dead: The Prison Board Game is to earn enough “Leadership Points” to take control of the entire group of survivors. Is Rick the right leader? Maybe. You and up to five of your friends can take on the role of six leaders from the comic and find out! Play as Rick, Michonne, Dale, Andrea, Glenn or Tyreese. The game reportedly plays differently each and every time so it should bring tons of enjoyment to  you and your friends and family.

The suggested retail price for the new Walking Dead comic board game is $49.99. The current anticipated release date is November of 2014 but is subject to change.

The best part about this sequel to the original Walking Dead comic board game is you can get involved and help support it’s development! How?  The game is being premiered on the wildly popular crowdfunding site kickstarter.com.  This allows the developers to raise the needed funds but perhaps just as importantly, it allows everyone that contributes to the game’s development to reap some very cool collectible rewards. Basically you contribute funds to back the project in exchange for cool rewards and bonuses.  You can even score the game a little cheaper in the process! Personal bonuses are great but you can even have a hand in making the game better for everyone! How cool is that? Read on and check out the video below for more details.

The description in the kickstarter page probably explains it best:

By supporting The Walking Dead The Prison – Board GameYOU will be helping to not only make this game a reality, but also helping us bring more value to our players than if we were pursuing a traditional retail model.

We are two small gaming companies, and while we may have a very strong brand license, we still have to develop, design, produce, manufacture, ship, market and sell our product. So, every little bit helps.

In addition to showing that you’re a fan of The Walking Dead and getting your copy before it hits store shelves, you’ll also be creating unique opportunities to make the game better.

Our website, WalkingDeadBoardGame.com, frequently receives all sorts of requests from fans that aren’t always practical in a traditional business model, but now through Kickstarter become possible!

As a tremendous and heartfelt thank you for your support, we are going to give you some amazing rewards, from additional, better components to enhanced features and customization. We’ll even be able to offer Kickstarter backers the chance to get themselves into the game through their own unique character cards or the chance for a few backers to become characters in every copy of the game produced.

So, if you ever wanted to see how you would look, feel and survive in the world of The Walking Dead, here’s your chance!

Walking Dead fans interested in contributing to the game can pledge at various levels starting at just $1.00 and going all the way up to $10,000 or more! You’ll need to pledge at least $5.00 to hit the first reward level. Five bucks will get you listed as a supporter in the rule book and on the website. Contribute $10 to $24.99 and you’ll be listed as a supporter and also receive an exclusive dice bag. Plunk down $25 and you’ll receive a thank you in the rulebook and the website and an exclusive Walking Dead Dice tray. At the $47.00 pledge level you’ll receive a copy of the game and the previously mentioned thank you messages.  At around $80 you’ll receive a copy of the board game, all applicable thank you’s and the exclusive dice bag and dice tray! (This is my personal favorite and probably the option I’ll choose.) Of course there are a ton of other reward levels beyond the $100 range but I won’t spoil it. Head on over to the kickstarter project page and have a look for yourself.

We have no doubts this funding campaign will work and the game will easily hit it’s original funding goal. What’s really cool is the option to push for more funding and improve the end result. The harder we work, the better the game will be for fans! The folks behind the game have set stretch goals. Simply put, these are bonuses that will be added to the game if the project raises more than the original $81,100 goal. For example, if the project raises $90,000 a card designed with facebook fan input will be implemented in the game. If the project raises $100,000 Dexter will be a featured starting character. If pledges total $115,000 an expansion pack featuring an additional 25 encounter cards and 5 goals will be added to the game. If the project sees $130,000 raised Shane will be back from the dead and featured as a starting character in the game! Additional mystery goals will be unlocked should the project raise $150,000 or more.

How to Contribute:

Visit the official Kickstarter page for this project or check out the widget below. Read the details and select which level you’d like to contribute at. The funding period for this project is open from March 5th through April 2nd, 2014. It’s worth noting that many of the reward bonuses are limited in number and once they’re gone they’re gone! Take for example, the $45 “In The Camper Early Bird Special” reward of which only 250 are available.

Funding for this project will only be released if it reaches the goad of $81,100 in pledges. The Walking Dead The Prison Board Game has already received nearly $8,000 in pledges from 114 backers at this point but there’s only 27 days left. Help bring this game to life and bring more value to it in the process by making a pledge today!

If you can’t pledge or you want to help beyond simply contributing funds you can make a huge difference for free! Simply share this blog post with friends and family via social media or send people to the page on kickstarter. Helpspread the word!: http://kck.st/1eXSBda

Need the First Walking Dead comic board game? It’s actually not needed to play the upcoming sequel but as a collector and Walking Dead fan, you still NEED to own it!

Spend a few minutes browsing etsy and similar sites and you’ll quickly come to the conclusion that there are a lot of talented, creative and gifted zombie fans out there.  The best zombie gifts often aren’t the mass produced variety. Sometimes the best and most unique zombie gift is the one that is crafted by hand with love in someone’s home, garage, workshop or tiny studio.  These handmade zombie gifts aren’t churned out by factories. They’re  made by passionate mothers, single parents, and families and individuals that make these gifts as a way to supplement their income.  They’re also made by people that love zombie culture and do this is as a hobby.

These types of sellers usually lack the funds to advertise their products to the masses.  Advertising is very expensive.   It’s also very difficult to target zombie minded buyers with traditional advertising.  (What good is handing over fistfuls of hard earned cash for advertising when the people seeing it aren’t interested in what your selling in the first place?)

At ZombieGift.com we’ve managed to find a way to solve both problems. Etsy sellers and other handmade zombie entreprenueurs con now list their handmade zombie gifts in our new “Handmade zombie gifts” category at ZombieGift.com.  The listings are very affordable. Most sellers can have their product listed on our site and promoted by us for less than $10.00 a month!

For more information on how you can get your handmade zombie item listed on our site CLICK HERE.

Why are we doing this?

For the reasons listed above and many more!  I’m no stranger to handmade zombie gifts. I sell handmade zombie gifts myself and know firsthand how difficult it can be to reach zombie fans via conventional marketing.  This new service on our site helps me so why not help the rest of my handcrafting zombie friends and colleagues?

Another reason we came up with this idea is to help those shopping for unique zombie gifts and collectibles.  We are dedicated to becoming the website’s premiere destination for zombie shoppers. When it comes to shopping for zombie gifts, internet users end up at our site.   Unfortunately most of the items on our site are mass produced or produced in a factory.  Many visitors to our site simply won’t know how many awesome handmade zombie gifts exist out there without us showing them!

Of course there’s more to it than a big heart, a love of zombies and wanting to help others.   There are more selfish reasons than that. We’re not going to get rich doing this but we do have to charge something for our time.  The small revenue generated with this service helps us to offset webhosting costs and can also go toward giveaway prizes.  We want to offer bigger, better zombie giveaways even more frequently than we do now. This will help us do that!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! What a lovely day it is. Everything is zombie green, everyone is at least “part Irish” and people talk in the worst Irish accents you’ll ever hear. The green beer will flow making a fun day even more spectacular. St. Patrick’s Day does present a very serious  danger worth a word of caution.

Here at ZombieGift.com we care about our friends and readers. We don’t want anything terrible to happen to you. I know what you’re thinking and you’re only partly right. Of course we’ll give you the friendly reminder to not drink and drive. You’ve heard it enough but one more time never hurts: Be smart…don’t drink and drive. Drinking and driving is a serious danger on St. Patty’s day, but there is another threat that many zombie fans don’t consider: HMZ syndrome.  HMZ stands for “Human Mistaken for Zombie”.  The threat of being mistaken for one of the undead is greatly increased on St. Patrick’s day. In fact it’s topped by only one other day, October 31st.

Our research shows the incidence of humans being mistaken for zombies increases by 68% on St. Patrick’s Day. How could someone mistake a perfectly normal and uninfected human for a zombie? Let’s examine the similarities between a drunken  St. Patrick’s Day enthusiast and a zombie to help clarify the situation.

Let’s look at your classic zombie. Forget about those crazy modern 28 Days Later zombies that sprint around like maniacs.  We’re talking about the classic shambler we all know and love. Your classic zombie  has decreased cognitive ability. Let’s face it, the classic zombie isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. They don’t think quick on their feet and they don’t make very good decisions.

Zombies typically throw caution to the wind and act without regard to their own safety. They will often be seen foolishly entering into situations with absolutely no fear or worry of bodily injury. Zombies also typically don’t think about the consequences their actions might have on others around them.

Classic zombies also have decreased reflexes and decreased motor coordination. You won’t see a zombie winning any  gymnastics competitions. Nor will they be observed on the side of the road passing any field sobriety tests. Classic zombies just aren’t all that coordinated.

Zombies are easily knocked off balance. They fall down and slowly get back to their feet. They typically shuffle, stumble and shamble their way from one point to the next. See where we’re going with all of this? Well we aren’t done yet. Let’s look at speech.

Classic zombies just don’t communicate coherently. If they do manage to attempt speech it’s typically a garbled unintelligible moan or groan. You won’t have many coherent conversations with zombies.  Worse yet when they do make an attempt to form speech it’s often accompanied by foul smelling breath, drool, and other unsightly traits.

Let’s finish with appearance and clothing. Zombies are typically green or appear very pale and ill. They also frequently have wrinkled, dirty, smelly and disheveled clothing. Articles of clothing are also frequently inexplicably missing.

By now I’m sure you are seeing the numerous parallels between a drunken St. Patrick’s day celebrant and a zombie. Truth be told most of us may look more zombie than human at the end of the night tonight. Think about how many people will be stumbling around, wearing predominately green, mumbling incoherently, smelling terribly, and making horrible decisions. The threat is very real my friend.

With that in mind we want to help protect you as you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. We’ve created a handy chart to help the general public tell the difference between a zombie and a drunken St. Patrick’s Day celebrant. Check it out below. You can even download it and share it with friends. We recommend printing it out as a flyer and passing it out to your friends and patrons at your local pub. Together we can prevent human deaths due to HMZ Syndrome this St. Patrick’s Day! Be smart, “Double Take BEFORE You Double Tap!”

Many of you probably remember we were recently trying to help a fellow zombie fan raise some funding to get her awesome zombie kitchen product ideas brought to life. Well I’m happy to announce the Kickstarter fund raising project was a success!

She met her goal along with a little extra about a day before her deadline. Thanks to all of our readers who helped support the cause. Cassie has been in touch with us and we should have a set to review and hopefully some extras to possibly giveaway in the next few months.

We’re very excited this zombie project will see the light of day. We’ll keep you posted and maybe you come over for dinner sometime this summer. After all we’ll be looking for any excuse to show off our awesome zombie kitchen swag!

About a week ago we posted about a zombie kitchen product design project on Kickstarter. We won’t re-hash all the details here because you can read the original post.

The gist of the story is a zombie minded entrepreneur named Cassie needed help raising about $3,000 to bring the awesome zombie aprons and kitchen items she imagined to life. She already had the design and just needed the funds to take her final design from idea to tangible product.

We’ve been checking in from time to time to see how things are going. Thanks to many of you, and generous members of the Kickstarter community, she has raised about 2/3 of her funds.  However she’s still short of her goal by about $1,000 and she’s running out of time!

Today when checking on her progress we noticed she uploaded a video as a last effort to push her project to her funding goal. We expected another boring Kickstarter video begging for backers. Boy were we wrong!

She and her husband have put together a pretty darn funny video promoting her project. It’s done in a very cool 1950’s style and I was truly impressed with their unique and creative approach. They did such an awesome job on the video that I just HAD to share it with all of you. Check it out below:

I’d like to make one last call to all you zombie fans. If you have a little extra cash laying around please help contribute and push this project to the funding goal.  There are only 4 days left and as of the time of this post Cassie still needs to raise about $1,030 to reach her goal.

You can pledge a contribution as small as $1.00 or $10.00.  You also score a thank you gift for contributions $10 and over. You can basically be the first group of zombie fans to purchase these items by pledging to contribute the right amount. You can donate to get your favorite single item or grab the entire set for a contribution of $40!

Remember projects on Kickstarter are all or nothing. The  only way your credit card is charged, and the only way Cassie receives ANY funding, is if 100% of the funding goal is met. If she falls short by even $50 or $100 she won’t receive her funding and these zombie products likely won’t ever  be made! Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen!

We recently had the pleasure of talking to author Michael Spradlin. He’s written several zombie related books such as:

Mr. Spradlin is a very cool guy. He’s so cool in fact that he sent us three wickedly awesome zombie prize packs to give away to our zombie fans, friends and followers! Three lucky winners will receive a Michael Spradlin Zombie prize pack consisting of:

1. One “Mobile Cadaver Control Specialist” Zombie T-Shirt

2. One copy of Jack and Jill Went Up to Kill: A Book of Zombie Nursery Rhymes, autographed by the author himself!

3. One copy of Every Zombie Eats Somebody Sometime: A Book of Zombie Love Songs, autographed by Michael Spradlin.

4. One autographed copy of  It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Zombies: A Book of Zombie Christmas Carols.

We were recently approached by zombie entrepreneur Cassie Kelly about the possibility of reviewing her zombie themed kitchen items here on our blog. We are always excited to get our undead hands on some new zombie merchandise around here. There’s just one catch with Cassie’s zombie products . . . they technically don’t exist yet. Don’t get me wrong. I’m sure there is a prototype or two laying around somewhere, but her zombie themed aprons, oven mitts and hot pads aren’t in full production yet. She needs a little financial help to take her idea from the final design stage into production. That’s where you come in my zombie friend! You can help bring these  awesome zombie kitchen items into existence and get rewarded in the process!

Cassie needs $3,000 to accomplish her goals. Thanks to Kickstarter.com she’s already about a third of the way there! What is Kickstarter.com? It is a place where creative people like Cassie take their ideas and raise the funds needed to turn them into something tangible. People interested in supporting a project can become “backers” by pledging a small amount. This can typically be anything from $1.00 to $10.00 to $500 or more. In return for pledging specific amounts, backers are often promised a reward for their donation. The best part is there is little risk. Projects aren’t funded, and the credit cards of backers aren’t charged, unless the project raises 100% of its funding goal.

You’re probably wondering how Cassie’s fund raising efforts are going. As of 9:00 am this morning (2/26/2012) 28 different backers have pledged a combined total of $1,083 towards her $3,000 goal! That’s great but  she only has 11 days left to raise the remaining funds. Let’s see if we can all chip in a little and push her to her goal.

Don’t worry my greedy zombie friend. You will be rewarded for your generosity.  There are a multitude of rewards for different pledge amounts and there is one to fit any budget. For example if you back the project with a $10.00 pledge or more you will receive a poster. Pledge $25.00 or more and you’ll receive the zombie oven mitt. Pledges of $30.00 or more get you the zombie innards apron. There are many more pledge amounts so hurry over to her Kickstarter page and check out the details.

Cassie has promised to send us some product for review if her project ends up getting funded and we certainly plan to hold her to that. If the final product looks as good as her design we can’t wait to get our hands on these and review the finished product. At this point we are already pretty impressed with the design. She’s pulled off the zombie theme without going too far.  She’s hit the right combination of gore and cuteness. These zombie items are masculine and zombie enough for the man of the house to enjoy, but still fun enough that they won’t scare away the women and children! We really like the hot pad with the phrase, “This brain is too hot!”  There is just the right amount of cute gore so no one will be offended or made too nauseous to eat.

To back Cassie’s project and help bring these zombie kitchen items into fruition head on over  to:  http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cassiekelly/zombie-kitchen

There are about 10 different pledge amounts from $1.00 to $500.00 or more. By becoming a backer not only will you be helping a zombie friend bring their great idea to life, you could also be one of the very first to own these great products. If this project is successful Cassie hopes to churn out more products with delightfully ghoulish illustrations. We can’t wait!

** THIS PROJECT WILL ONLY BE FUNDED IF AT LEAST $3,000 IS PLEDGED BY FRIDAY MAR 9, 1:08AM EST. **

You didn’t think he would be that easy to get rid of did you? As if Osama Bin Laden wasn’t evil enough when he was living…now he’s back as a ZOMBIE! If there is anything more horrifying than a zombie, it would probably be a horde of zombie terrorists led by Bin Laden. That’s exactly what the folks at ArrowStorm Entertainment are bringing zombie fans in their upcoming film Osombie: The Axis of Evil Dead.  The best part is zombie fans can help contribute to this project and make it even more amazing. More on that later. For now let’s look a little closer at the plot of this zombie thriller.

If you are tired of all the same old zombie nonsense in films then this one just might have the extra plot details to keep you happy. Of course that doesn’t mean the film lacks the zombie gore and epic zombie deaths we all expect in a zombie film. Check out the official trailer for Osombie below:

Here is a plot description and teaser from the people behind this new zombie film:

The story follows Dusty, a yoga instructor from Colorado, who is on a desperate rescue mission to save her crazy brother Derek, a conspiracy theorist who is convinced Osama Bin Laden is still alive, despite having been buried at sea. In Afghanistan, Dusty falls in with a team of NATO Special Forces on a secret assignment. Turns out Derek is not so crazy after all, and that Osama has returned from his watery grave and is making an army of zombie terrorists. When the group crashes headlong into the growing zombie apocalypse, Dusty and the troops must find and destroy the root of the zombie insurgency before it infests the rest of the world.

Take whatever negative connotations you have about this film and hold them for a few minutes.  I admit when I first heard about this film I thought it sounded pretty odd . Honestly I thought it sounded like it had the makings for a campy zombie train wreck.  I’m not trying to be a douche here, I’m just being honest. I’m also pointing out how wrong my initial impression was.  I envisioned some terrible production with crappy makeup, terrible effects and little to no resemblance to a professionally done film.  Then I saw the movie poster and was pretty impressed.   Then I clicked to watch the trailer and I was pleasantly surprised.

This movie actually looks pretty damn cool! The trailer did it’s job and now I can’t wait to see the film.  Maybe it’s because I have a thing for guns, zombies, explosions, violence and hot chicks.  After all, any good modern zombie film knows how to combine all of those elements in just the right mixture. From the 1:05 long trailer for Osombie it looks like the folks at ArrowStorm Entertainment are on the right track!

Maybe my initial reluctance to  Osombie: The Axis of Evil Dead was because I had heard it was a project being funded by Kickstarter. For those of you who don’t know, Kickstarter.com is a place where businesses, individuals and ambitious dreamers of all types go to seek funding for their creative projects. Now before you bash me , I am NOT a Kickstarter hater. Plenty of awesome things have come from the site and the generous people and organizations that back the projects listed there. That being said, there are also plenty of pipe dream projects that just never get legs.  Unfortunately for everyone person that has their stuff together and has a professional caliber project plan, there is at least one person who hasn’t thought about much beyond, “I need money”.

Maybe I thought Osombie was going to be one of the those “here today, gone tomorrow” zombie film ideas.  Boy was I wrong!  These guys aren’t messing around. They aren’t raising money for a zombie film that they hope to make.  It turns out Osombie is basically already done! The film has already been shot and edited! The money being raised on Kickstarter is additional capital being raised for post production work, and YOU can help.

It turns out plenty of other people like the concept of Osombie and have pledged to support it.  As of 11:00 am on 2/13/2012 the film project has 295 backers willing to contribute a total of over $21,000. The folks at ArrowStorm Entertainment originally set a goal of $15,000. Once they met that goal they decided to set a new goal of $30,000 to make this zombie film even more spectacular! There are 49 fundraising days left for this project.  There are various prizes and rewards backers will receive for contributing. These incentives start at the $5.00 pledge mark and only get better as you contribute more to the cause.  Zombie fans interested in supporting the film can click the banner below:

In the end, how awesome Osombie turns out is partly up to us. We can help support the post production efforts and polishing of the final project by contributing any amount from $1.00 to  thousands!  I can’t wait to see the film and we encourage zombie fans across the world to contribute.  Don’t think of it as donation for a zombie film. Think of it as funding the war against zombie terrorism. Together we CAN make a difference!
